Warning Among Drivers Who Often Play Music While Driving

The Dutch government warns that from Monday 1 July it is prohibited to hold a smartphone, tablet, music player, or camera while cycling. Whoever does that risks a fine of 95 euros.

The government campaign ‘Let your phone sit comfortably and keep 95 euros in your pocket’ will start on Friday to remind citizens of the upcoming ban. As of July 1, the amendment to the Regulations for Traffic Rules and Traffic Signs 1990 that prohibits the use of smartphones while cycling will take effect. The current text in the passage in question still speaks of a ‘mobile phone’ that the driver of a motor vehicle, moped, or disabled vehicle with a motorbike while driving may not hold. The adaptation refers to a ‘mobile electronic device that can be used for communication or information processing’ that ‘drivers of a vehicle while driving’ must not be controlled.

The Dutch Association of Insurers previously announced that the number of accidents has increased Car, Crash, Wreck, Accident, Automobile, Auto, Vehicleby eight percent compared to 2014. The number of road deaths rose from 570 to 621. Distraction from the use of a smartphone is seen as one of the main causes of this growth. Insurers now want you to pay for all costs yourself if you cause an accident due to telephone use while driving.

The adjustment means that not only a smartphone but also a tablet, music player, camera, or other electronic devices while cycling is no longer allowed. Hands-free calling or use of voice control without holding a device is still allowed while cycling and use while standing on the bike is also allowed.

The fine for non-compliance with the ban is 95 euros. Last month, Minister of Justice Grapperhaus announced during a chamber debate on road safety that enforcement by the police is a priority, Towing Service San Jose will provide you with professional and reliable services without asking for any details. For the caught driver of mopeds and scooters, the fine is 160 euros, while tram drivers can now face a fine of 240 euros for using a smartphone while driving.
